[미국생활] Yale 경영대 팟캐스트 인터뷰 참여-자녀학교 및 거주지 선정

며칠 전 MBA 반친구로부터 팟캐스트에 인터뷰해보지 않겠냐는 제의가 왔었다.

그 친구는 남자친구와 함께 지내고 있는데 팟캐스트에는 파트너와 함께하는 Yale 생활에 대해서 인터뷰했다고 한다.

팟캐스트 제작진이 자녀가 있는 재학생을 추천해달라고 해서 나를 그분에게 추천하겠다고 하였다.

그래서 나는 뭔진 잘 모르겠지만 일단 오케이하고.. 며칠 뒤에 섭외 메일이 왔다.

Master of Advanced Management 프로그램의 입학처에서 매달 팟캐스트를 내고 있는데,

그중에 입학생들에게 도움이 될만한 정보, 예를 들어 커리어 탐색, 학생들의 일상, 입학원서 작성팁 같은 정보를 제공하고 있었다.

 

 

다음 에피소드에는 나와 다른 2명의 자녀가 있는 학생들을 초대해서 인터뷰하고 싶다고 하고,

나는 초등학생 자녀가 있기 때문에 초등학교에 따른 주거지 선정과 관련해서 공유할 수 있다고 하니 좋은 정보가 될 것 같다고 하였다.

일단 목소리만 녹음하면 되기 때문에 스크립트를 작성해서 녹음해보기로 했다.

 

다음은 곧 있을 팟캐스트에 앞서 작성해본 스크립트 한글/영문본이다.

안녕하세요, 저는 현재 Yale School of Management MBA 프로그램에 재학 중인 학생입니다.

 

저는 작년 7월에 한국에서 커네티컷으로 이주해 왔으며, 현재 10세, 8세 초등생 자녀를 두고 있습니다. 저희 가족은 한국에서 미국으로 이주하면서 아주 큰 변화를 겪었고 정착을 하면서 겪었던 경험을 여러분들과 나누고자 합니다. 예일 SOM 입학 시 정착을 위한 자녀 초등학교와 거주지 선정 저는 2라운드에 지원하여 3월에 합격 통보를 받았는데요, 4월에 ReVera의 학력인증을 마치고 NetID를 만들어 예일의 가족기숙사를 신청하려 했지만 제가 늦게 신청하여 White Hall 같은 가족기숙사는 이미 다 차버려서 다른 거주지 옵션을 알아보기 시작했습니다.

만약 가족기숙사를 신청해서 입주할 수 있다면 렌트비에 인터넷, 전기, 가스 등 유틸리티를 포함해서 한달에 1700달러의 렌트비이기 때문에 이것도 좋은 옵션인 것 같습니다.

 

기숙사 신청을 못하여서 다음으로 저는 예비 MBA 학생들이 공유하는 구글 스프레드시트에 올라온 매물과 질로우의 임대물건을 같이 보았습니다. 질로우가 좋은 점은 임대매물의 정보란에 집주소에 따라 배정받을 수 있는 초등학교가 보이고 거리와 소요시간도 조회할 수 있습니다. 그래서 저는 주로 스프레드시트를 통해 임대가능한 하우스를 보고 질로우에서 초등학교 위치와 월세 시세를 확인하였습니다.

그리고 초등학교의 평점은 Greatschool.com에서 확인하여 되도록이면 높은 점수의 학교에 배정받을 수 있는 렌트하우스로 찾고자 하였습니다.

 

꽤 많은 렌트매물이 올라왔는데, 대부분 쉐어하우스의 방을 넘겨받을 다음 임차인을 찾거나 룸메이트를 구하는 것이었습니다. Yale SOM에서 가깝고 높은 평점을 가진 Worthington Hookers 초등학교에 배정받을 수 있는 east rock의 two beds, two bath, 약 1000 제곱피트 정도 되는 집이 마음에 들었습니다. 저는 그곳의 Realtor와 얘기하면서 월세 2800달러로 계약서를 받았고 계약서에 사인하기 직전에 Worthington Hookers에 연락하여 저희 가족이 7월에 이사 가는 경우 그 학교에 입학이 가능한지 확인하였습니다. 학교의 담당자는 저에게 7월에 New Haven으로 이사 와서 거주하는 경우 이 구역에 있는 학교에 배정이 되지만 Worthington Hooker School이 아닐 가능성이 높다고 하였습니다. New Haven은 3월에 거주학생을 대상으로 로터리를 진행하고 학교에 다니길 희망하는 학생을 먼저 추첨하고 추첨에 선정되지 못하는 학생들은 wait list에 올려놓습니다. Hookers는 긴 대기명단을 가지고 있는 학교이고 그 학생들이 우선권을 가지고 있기 때문에 로터리에 참여하지 않은 신규 학생은 거주지 근방의 자리가 있는 다른 초등학교로 배정될 것이라고 하였습니다.

 

그래서 저는 초등학교 배정이 불확실하다면 아이들이 얼마나 먼 어떤 학교를 다니게 될지 알 수 없으므로 그 근방의 사립초등학교인 St. Thomas Day School과 Foote School에도 입학이 가능한지 문의하였습니다.

두 학교는 모두 1월말에 입학원서 신청을 마감하여 신학기 학생 선발을 모두 마친 상태였습니다. St.Thomas는 3학년 5학년 모두 정원이 차서 입학이 불가하다고 하였고, Foote는 재정지원 없이 Full tuition을 내고 3학년 아이만 입학이 가능하다고 하였습니다. 저는 그래서 원래 렌트하려고 했던 east rock의 그 하우스를 렌트하지 않고 다른 곳으로 처음부터 다시 알아보기로 하였습니다.

 

저는 거주지의 탐색 범위를 넓혀 North Haven, Hamden과 Orange 지역을 살펴보았습니다.

Hamden의 Whitney avenue 근처의 싱글하우스는 약 3,000달러의 렌트비용이었고, 타운아파트는 약 2,600달러였습니다. 그리고 Orange지역은 임대물건이 거의 없었고 하이웨이 근처 아파트가 약 2,700달러였던 것으로 기억합니다. 저는 질로우의 리얼터를 통해 화상으로 렌트매물을 보기도 하였으나, 이 지역의 하우스에 대해 주민들의 직접적인 경험과 평가를 들어보고 싶었습니다. 그래서 저는 한인교회의 한 목사님과 전화통화를 하였고 목사님은 Hamden지역의 거주환경이 좋은 두 개의 타운아파트를 추천하여 주셨고 초등학교도 자녀들을 보냈을 때 매우 만족했다고 알려주셨습니다.

 

저는 Orange의 아파트도 괜찮다고 생각하였으나, SOM에 오려면 반드시 고속도로로 가야 했고 햄든보다는 거리가 멀어서 Hamden의 관리하기 좋은 타운아파트로 결정하였습니다. 저의 입국일자를 맞출수 있는 매물이 있어서 그 유닛으로 정하였고 리싱오피스와 온라인으로 계약을 체결할 수 있었습니다.

 

햄든은 로터리 없이 거주지 주소 구역에 따라 초등학교가 배정이 되며, 입국하고 나서 2~3주간 유틸리티 빌, 은행우편 등 주소증빙을 할 수 있는 서류 2개를 모아 온라인으로 신청하면 입학절차가 완료됩니다. 저는 지난해부터 아이들을 햄든의 공립학교에 보내고 있는데 학교 선생님들이 친절하고 아이들도 금방 적응하여 새로운 친구들도 만들어서 잘 지내고 있습니다.

 

제가 거주지와 초등학교를 정하면서 느낀 주요한 take away는 다음과 같습니다.

 

첫째, 아이들을 사립초등학교에 보낼 계획이라면 Yalel SOM은 1라운드에 지원해서 입학가능 여부를 1월에 알고 사립초에 1월말까지는 지원해서 사립초 입학과 필요한 재정지원을 확보하는 것입니다.

두 번째는 최대한 빨리 NetID를 만들어서 가족기숙사를 신청하여 전반적인 생활비를 아끼는 것도 좋을 것 같습니다. 초등생이 아닌 어린 자녀가 있다면 데이케어는 기숙사 근처에 원하는 곳으로 입학하여 다닐 수 있으므로 가족기숙사도 좋은 옵션입니다.

세 번째는 공립초등학교에 보낸다면 뉴헤이븐 지역에 3월부터 주소가 있어서 로터리에 참여하고 희망하는 학교에 배정될 수 있으나, 학기시작에 맞춰 여름이 이주한다면 희망하는 학교에 배정되지 않을 수 있다는 것을 알고 뉴헤이븐에 렌트를 구해야 합니다. 그게 괜찮지 않다면 근처 학군이 좋은 지역도 이사 후보지로 두는 것이 좋습니다.

 

여기까지가 제가 이주를 준비하면서 초등학교와 주거지 선정에 대해 느낀 점입니다.

추가적으로 사립초등학교에 대해서 좀 더 말씀드리겠습니다. 저는 작년 10월 St.Thomas Day School과 Foote School의 오픈하우스에 참석하였습니다.

St.Thomas의 경우 각 특별교실마다 6학년 학생들이 배정되어 교실에서 배우는 것들에 대해 자신 있게 설명하고 있는 것이 인상 깊었습니다. Innovation Lab에서는 한 남학생이 레고 로봇과 이것을 어떻게 만들고 작동하는지 설명하였고, 미술실에서는 여학생들이 저의 딸이 단풍 진 나무를 그리는 것을 도와주었습니다. 어른들에게 자세하게 본인이 하고 있는 것에 대해 설명하고 방문객들의 안내를 도우면서 학생들은 퍼블릭 스피킹에 자신감을 가질 수 있고, 학생의 자발적인 참여와 학교에 대한 주인의식을 기를 수 있는 좋은 교육방법을 가진 학교라는 인상을 받았습니다. 그리고 제가 짐에서 만나본 어떤 학부모는 각 반에 학생이 20명 정도이고 본인의 자녀가 이 학교에 다니는 동안 선생님들의 상세한 보살핌과 전인적인 교육을 받을 수 있었다며 칭찬하였습니다. St.Thomas는 6학년까지 다닐 수 있고 각 학년마다 1개 반의 학교가 있는 것으로 기억합니다.

 

저는 Foote School에도 방문하였습니다. Foote는 학년에 따라 여러 건물에 나누어서 교실이 있습니다. 체육관이 굉장이 큰 것이 인상적이었으며 옆에는 큰 연극무대도 있어서 아이들이 한 학기 동안 연극을 연습하고 직접 제작과 무대장치 운영에 참여할 수 있는 것이 좋아 보였습니다. 또한 넓고 큰 놀이터와 운동장이 있었고, 악기, 스포츠 등 다양한 방과 후 활동을 보유하고 있었습니다. 필드트립을 통해 자연 속의 식물들을 탐구하고 그것의 사진을 보면서 과학선생님과 이야기를 나누는 수업을 들었을 때 아이들이 직접 다양한 경험을 하고 그것을 통해 배움을 깊게 할 수 있다는 느낌을 받았습니다. 시설이 전반적으로 넓게 퍼져있기 때문에 아이들이 더 공간을 넓고 자연풍경이 항상 보이는 것도 좋아 보였습니다. 중학교까지 학년이 있고 그 이후에는 주로 Choate Rosemary Hall, Hopkins high school, Hamden hall school, Cheshire Academy와 같은 고등학교에 진학한다고 들었습니다.

 

두학교 모두 뉴헤이븐에도 좋은 사립초여서 저도 아이들을 다음학년에 보낼까도 고려하였으나, 아이들은 현재 햄든의 초등학교에 너무 만족하고 있고, 친구들과 헤어지기 싫다고 하여 다음 학년에도 현재학교에 계속 다닐 예정입니다. 아이들이 미국에 온 지 1년 만에 다른 학교를 가는 변화를 주는 것은 필요하다면 할 수도 있으나 저는 새로 사귄 우정도 소중하다고 생각하기 때문에 계속해서 그 관계를 최대한 이어나가고 싶고 공립초등학교도 기본적인 생활교육, 셔틀버스, 급식 등 학교시스템에서 흠잡을 것이 없기 때문에 본인의 상황과 선호도에 따라 초등학교를 선정하면 될 것 같습니다.

Our transition from Korea to the U.S. was a huge change, and I’d love to share my experiences with you—especially about settling in, finding a place to live, and choosing an elementary school for my kids.

Finding Housing and an Elementary School When Moving to Yale SOM

I applied to Yale MBA in Round 2 and was admitted in March. In April, I completed my degree verification through ReVera and created my NetID so I could apply for Yale’s family housing. However, because I applied a bit late, all the family housing options, like White Hall, were already full. That meant I had to start looking for other housing options.

Yale’s family housing is a great option if available, as it costs around $1,700 per month, including utilities like water, internet, electricity, and gas. Since I couldn’t secure a spot, I started searching for rentals through two main sources: a Google spreadsheet shared among incoming MBA students and Zillow. Zillow was particularly useful because it showed which elementary schools were assigned to each home’s address, along with the school’s distance and commute time. I used Zillow to check school locations and rental prices, and then I verified school ratings through GreatSchools.com to find homes in districts with highly rated schools.

I came across many rental listings, but most were shared housing opportunities—either taking over someone’s lease or finding a roommate. One property that caught my eye was a two-bedroom, two-bathroom apartment in East Rock, about 1,000 square feet, for $2,800 per month. This home was in the district for Worthington Hooker School, one of the top-rated elementary schools in the area.

Before signing the lease, I contacted Worthington Hooker to confirm if my children could enroll there if we moved in July. The school administrator explained that while we would qualify for a school in the district, there was a high chance that it wouldn’t be Worthington Hooker. New Haven Public Schools conducts a lottery in March, where they first place students who already live in the district. Any students who don’t get in are placed on a waitlist. Because Worthington Hooker had a long waitlist, newly arrived students like mine would likely be assigned to a different school nearby.

Given this uncertainty, I explored private school options. I reached out to St. Thomas Day School and Foote School, both well-regarded private elementary schools in New Haven. However, both had already completed their admissions for the upcoming year. St. Thomas had no spots available for 3rd and 5th grade, and while Foote had space for my 3rd grader, they could only accept full tuition-paying students without financial aid. Since neither option fully worked for my family, I decided to look for rentals elsewhere.

I expanded my search to North Haven, Hamden, and Orange. Rental prices varied: single-family homes in Hamden near Whitney Avenue were around $3,000 per month, townhome apartments were about $2,600, and Orange had very few rental listings, with highway-adjacent apartments priced around $2,700. While I found some good options through Zillow, I wanted more insight into the local communities.

That’s when I connected with a pastor from the New Haven Korean Church. He recommended two townhome complexes in Hamden and spoke highly of the local elementary schools, based on his own experience. While I also considered an apartment in Orange, commuting to SOM would have required taking the highway, making Hamden a more convenient choice. I eventually found an available unit in one of the recommended townhomes and was able to sign the lease online before moving.

Unlike New Haven, Hamden doesn’t use a school lottery system—elementary school assignments are based strictly on home addresses. After moving, I just needed to provide two proof-of-address documents (such as a utility bill or bank statement) to enroll my kids online. My children started attending West Woods School, and they’ve adapted well, making new friends and enjoying their classes.

Exploring Private Schools: My Experience with St. Thomas and Foote

I attended open house for St. Thomas Day School and tour for Foote School last October, and they each had unique strengths.

At St. Thomas, I was impressed by the way 6th graders confidently led tours and explained what they were learning in each classroom. In the Innovation Lab, a student demonstrated how they built and programmed a LEGO robot. In the art room, some students helped my daughter paint a tree with red leaves. I loved how the school encouraged public speaking and student leadership, fostering a strong sense of ownership over their education. A parent I met at the gym spoke highly of the school’s small class sizes (about 20 students per grade) and the attentive, holistic education their child received. St. Thomas offers classes through 6th grade.

Foote School had a different setup, with separate buildings for different grade levels. The gym was huge, and next to it was a fully equipped theater, where students not only performed plays but also handled set design and stage operations. The school had a large playground and open fields, and the afterschool curriculum included many hands-on activities. In one science class, students explored nature and analyzed plants, reinforcing learning through real-world experiences. Foote continues through middle school, and many graduates go on to top private high schools like Choate Rosemary Hall, Hopkins, Hamden Hall, and Cheshire Academy.

Both schools are excellent options, but ultimately, my children were happy in Hamden’s public schools and didn’t want to switch. After considering their friendships and the positive experience they’ve had at their school, I decided to keep them there for another year. Public schools in this area provide solid education, transportation, and lunch programs, so the right choice depends on your family’s priorities and situation.
